Easy Tips for Decorating with Accessories

Decorating and accentuating different spaces in my home with small decorative items or accessories, is hands down the most exciting part for me. I’m always in awe of the deep impact and texture accessories lend to a room. I know that furniture, architecture and other design elements play a vital role in setting the base of the room but the small decorative items have the magical ability to transform, elevate and synchronize everything together almost seamlessly. Many top rated interior designers and stylists will vouch for the importance of accessories and will not shy away from saying that they breathe life into any room. Be it a bold wall art décor, a statement area rug, lighting fixtures or other small decorative pieces.

Market places, home stores and even gift shops are packed to brim with options for decorative accessories but this is where we need to understand the impact of different pieces in our own setting. We can’t just put in everything we like into our space and wish it would fit in as a glove. Accessories like decorative pillows, candles and small pieces fits into the budget of every homeowner looking to rejuvenate their home space, but putting every piece you like will eventually make your room look like a hotchpotch of unimaginative, forced and drab décor elements. Striking the right balance is the key here if you want the decorative accessories to complement your décor and not to take it over.

A few simple and easy tips can make you ace your accessory game and take your décor up a notch. Placing the right kind of accessories in the right places will give your home décor a well pulled together, timeless, refined and trendy feel.

Give preference to Quality

I have put this tip at the top because this is a very vital tip in achieving a décor that feels very aesthetic and elegant. As I told earlier, home décor items are readily available in an overwhelming amount which can allure anyone to buy a number of items that can easily sabotage their decorative aspirations. Always keep quality over quantity, choose one or two decorative items that speak to you, look unique and give you the correct vibe. In home décor less is always more as it garners more attention and certainly balances the décor and not overpowers it.

Orchestrate the Scale

Have you ever come across a home that feels like an empty piece of land that has just a small patch of rug or a room which is overpowered and overshadowed by a huge piece of art? Scale and proportion go hand in hand with a well decorated and accessorized home. When accessories and décor elements are put in a space keeping in mind the scale and proportion you get a visually calming and serene décor. Wall art décor that is placed according to the size of the wall, an area rug that looks in sync with the furniture and decorative items are put according to the height of the furniture and eye level of the people will make a comfortable and classy home.

Break the Monotony

Many dwellers and home makers feel that a neutral color story is the best way to go with main furniture pieces, permanent fixtures and expensive items. Playing safe with items that you have to live with for years needs to be something you can resonate and find solace in over a long period of time.  On the other hand, when it comes to accessories, you should be anything but safe. Try to break the boredom and tediousness of the neutrals with accessories that bring visual interest to the décor. Insert pops of colors through decorative pillows, abstract wall art décor, area rugs and different groupings of decoration pieces.

Accessorize in Depth

Accessorizing may seem like a mindless job but it’s the very job that needs a profound aesthetic eye for which designers charge a lot of money. Accessorizing should be done in in depth layers to create a complex yet creative space. Always place your large items first and scarcely, and then move on to the medium and small sized pieces, filling in the empty spaces to give stability to the look. Grouping of many small items can give a feel of a large décor item but keep in mind to leave a breathing space and not cram everything.

Switch from Symmetrical to Asymmetrical Arrangements

When decorating with small items, we always aim for synchronized, balanced and symmetrical arrangements that look cohesive together, right? Well it’s now time to ditch that route and explore a more unconventional but exciting route that’s to arrange small items in grouping of odd numbers to give the décor a more stimulating look.

Takeaway

Home décor is ever evolving and progressing so sticking to old methods won’t cut it anymore especially if you want your home décor to create a buzz. Try to go think out-of-the-box but with keeping these tips in mind. Good luck for your home décor endeavors!!
